Democrats should use the State of the Union speech to expose Donald Trump but must continue to respect the office of the President, unlike Republicans when they yell “You lie!” or otherwise heckle.
But how to respect the office of the President when the person who holds that office so clearly does not? Simply not clapping and remaining seated is not enough to express how many Americans are feeling. I have two suggestions.
When Trump lies or distorts the facts, Democrats can remain silent but hold up the letters B and S in American sign language.
When Trump says something that dishonors the Presidency or refers to an action in which he has dishonored the Presidency, Democrats can stand up and turn their backs to him.
This would strike a balance between showing respect and failing to call out his disrespect.
